A recording of a Zoom session run by the Centre for London to explore the impact of Londoners’ changing travel habits on recovery and consider the emerging picture for future mobility. Participants include Sashi Verma, Director of Strategy and Chief Technology Officer Transport for London.
London is starting to get back on its feet. The government is encouraging workers back to the office and onto public transport. But our working patterns and preferences, along with the city’s transport system have undergone some major changes during this time.
Londoners are slowly returning to public transport, but commuting in peak time is still actively discouraged. New cycle lanes have appeared overnight. And road congestion is fast returning to normal, but could risk surpassing pre-virus levels.
Meanwhile Transport for London has just welcomed its new commissioner, Andy Byford, who is keen to get Londoners back on buses and tubes safely, as well as agree fair, long term and sustainable funding solutions with government.
With a focus on how different modes have been impacted by the crisis, we discussed the ongoing challenges for London’s transport system and considered how it can aid the economic recovery.
How will travel habits and preferences change as lockdown is eased further? What does the future hold for different travel modes beyond recovery?
