People who live in or visit Enfield Town are being asked to give their opinions about the proposed Palace Square development and, if they are not keen on it, what alternatives they would favour. A survey, running until 18th March, has been set up by the Enfield Society in collaboration with the national charity Civic Voice, and a public webinar is planned. The proposals unveiled by the developer last year include six tower blocks of between 12 and 26 storeys.

Information about how the Enfield Society proposes proceeding was included in an email sent to members this week (see below).

Palace Square

As you know, the Society doesn't believe the proposed Palace Square scheme is the right option for redeveloping our shopping centres. Six high-rise blocks of 600 rental flats will not provide the family homes Enfield needs, and the wider retail and leisure offer described is by no means guaranteed. Public consultation by the developer, DWS (Deutsche Bank) has been inadequate.

That’s why we asked Civic Voice, the national body which encourages public engagement in planning decisions, to create an independent survey. The aim is to involve the wider community, so as well as doing so yourself, please prompt others to complete the survey by 18th March 2021. If residents agree, the Society will work with interested parties to put forward alternative proposals to regenerate Enfield Town, while protecting the town's heritage and Conservation Area.

A public webinar is being planned and we will e-mail you again with the details of how to join in once the date is confirmed. In the meantime you can read more about the scheme and its impact on the conservation area on our web-site.

The Society has published a flyer which it will post to 10,000 households in and around Enfield Town to raise awareness of the proposals and the survey.

A recording of the first meeting is now available (see below).

Reporting on the meeting, Local Democracy Reporter Simon Allin writes that "Enfield Southgate MP Bambos Charalambous and Enfield North MP Feryal Clark warned the current plans would harm the character and heritage of the town and called for them to be re-worked". Read the full report.

There will be follow-up meetings, including the results of the survey being carried out by the Enfield Society, on 22nd March (1pm) and 25th March (7pm).

I wasn't invoved in this meeting, but I think that David Eden's posting goe beyond fair comment, in particular in its personalisation. I thought we had a "play the ball not the person" rule on PGC. This is a place for civilised discourse.

You're right, Colin. I shouldn't have let that one through and will remove it.
