[Original article]

The architectural practice EPR is consulting on its initial proposals for Palace Square, a shopping and residential development that would replace the existing Palace Gardens shopping centre. At its heart would be a 26-storey tower. Consultation runs until 30th October and there will be online events on 15th and 26th October.

"The new Palace Square would act as the heart from which new cafes, restaurants, co-working spaces, shops, a gym and boutique cinema would be accessed. The dining facilities and shops will open into the early evening, providing people coming to the centre of Enfield with places to go after 6pm."

Following an analysis of the results of the consultation, in December the developers will be be consulting with the Enfield community to show how the initial proposals have evolved. It is the intention to submit a planning application to Enfield Council in early 2021.

You can meet the project team behind the initial Palace Square masterplan and get the opportunity to ask any questions that you may have at these two Zoom webinars (registration essential):

There's more about the proposed development on the Enfield Dispatch website . It seems that Palace Square (the green buildings on the drawing) will only replace Palace Gardens, the older of the two adjacent shopping centres. The drawing shows Palace Exchange, shown in white, remaining in its present form.

The Enfield Society has issued the following press release:

The Enfield Society has looked carefully at the proposals for Palace Gardens shopping centre and had a meeting with the developers on Tuesday 13th October.

We support the need for investment in the Town Centre and believe that many of the proposals including reconfiguring the shopping units to meet current needs, opening up the shopping centre to Church Street and Cecil Road, creating a Town Square, bringing in other activities such as a small cinema and improving the landscaping are all positive developments.

The Society recognises the need to introduce residential use into the Town Centre development to both bring people into the Town and fund the improvements, however we have serious concerns about the proposed height of the landmark block. The Society is completely opposed to the inclusion of a tower block within the development.

The shopping centre forms part of Enfield Town Conservation Area and we believe that a tall building would dominate the historic heart of the Town. The Society believes that a lower rise development would be much more appropriate to the area.

While we admire and support the Christmas campaigns that we see pop up in December, we also know that help is urgently needed all year round, each and every year. As some people pack away after the festive break, we are still here.

Our support is not limited to a food package, but it leaps beyond - we form connections, we listen and respond to everyone who steps through our doors. We open up a warm, safe, environment which aims to feel like a home away from home.

For us to continue to thrive and grow, and keep supporting as many people as possible, we are asking you to become a Friend of Cooking Champions. Even a donation of just £5-10 per month can make a HUGE impact on the lives of those who come through our doors.
