pyrus chanticleer trees for planting in palmers green

These two Pyrus Chanticleers will soon be gracing Green Lanes, along with two olive trees

Palmers Green Action Team have some exciting news for everyone interested in making our home town live up to the Green in its name. This week the project to create a green link between two parks - Broomfield and Hazelwood Rec - will take a big step forward with the installation of four new trees along Green Lanes, each housed in a large and stylish pot.

Money to pay for the trees and their containers was raised through crowdfunding and a generous grant from the Mayor of London. And on Friday, thanks to Thor's Trees, who are giving their time to co-ordinate arrangements, the Action Team will be taking delivery of four stylish pots from Urbis Design, filling them with good compost from Thompsons and planting two Pyrus Chanticleer from Barcham Trees and two olives which have been very kindly donated by a local resident.

The Action Team also want to record their thanks to everyone who has supported the project, to the Mayor of London for his funding and to Enfield Council for their support and planning.

Because there is a large gas main and other services beneath the pavement in Green Lanes, planting the trees in the ground wasn't an option - but that doesn't mean that they have to be small.

Däna Roberts from the PG Action Team comments: "You can see from the photograph how tall the Pyrus are - they will break up the grey nicely once they are in leaf and flowering!"

stretch of green lanes in palmers green devoid of greeneryNot much fun for pollinators! Thanks, again, to the PG Action Team, this stretch of Green Lanes does now have more greenery than when this picture was taken, but the four large new trees will transform it

And it's not just about making the high street more attractive for shoppers. Däna explains that Palmers Green is right in the path of a "B-Line" being created by nature conservationists - a pathway allowing pollinating insects to move between wildflower-rich habitat "stepping stones". The greening of Green Lanes will provide such a pathway for pollinators between the two parks.

Däna says the Action Team want to inconvenience the public as little as possible when the trees are installed: "A small amount of disruption may be necessary to keep the volunteers safe. Please be forgiving if anything holds you up while installation happens."

And she says the team are keen for more people to get involved in greening projects - you can get in touch on or visit their website at www.palmersgreenactionteam.org.

Well done to the Action Team and the flower bed air vent outside the Job Centre, a previous PGAT project, is looking magnificent with its daffodils and other spring-perky greenery

While we admire and support the Christmas campaigns that we see pop up in December, we also know that help is urgently needed all year round, each and every year. As some people pack away after the festive break, we are still here.

Our support is not limited to a food package, but it leaps beyond - we form connections, we listen and respond to everyone who steps through our doors. We open up a warm, safe, environment which aims to feel like a home away from home.

For us to continue to thrive and grow, and keep supporting as many people as possible, we are asking you to become a Friend of Cooking Champions. Even a donation of just £5-10 per month can make a HUGE impact on the lives of those who come through our doors.

Pop to our People's Fundraising page to donate, and we promise to keep you updated with how your support is making a difference. Thank you, we appreciate you! Team Cooking Champions
