London's (probably the UK's?) only authentic Czech brewery has outgrown its premises in Bowes Park and is moving to a new and bigger home in Tottenham.
Bohem Brewery's beers have become so popular that it is unable to meet demands from potential new stockists and cannot even guarantee to have bottled beer in stock for customers to take home from its own bar, the Bohem Tap Room in Myddleton Road.
At the end of this month Bohem will be transferring its existing brewing kit from its current home - a converted shop in Whittington Road - to a much bigger facility in West Road, Tottenham. Then, in April, Bohem will be taking delivery of a new brewhouse made to measure by a firm in the Czech Republic, allowing a "dramatic" increase in production.
The new Bohem brewery will be very close to two other new-generation breweries - Redemption and One Mile End - and the three companies will be putting on events in collaboration. They don't see themselves as rivals, because each firm's beers are so different from the others'.
Tottenham is now well established as the brewing hub of north London. It is also the location of Beavertown, Pressure Drop and Brewheadz. According to the website Craft Beer London, Tottenham has suitable industrial units where both rents and business rates are low by London standards.
Further up the Lea Valley, one of the best known "craft beer" producers - Camden Town Brewery - is operating on a different scale altogether. Its brand new brewery in Ponders End cost £30 milliion - which it can afford because it now belongs to Anheuser Busch InBev, the multinational giant that has swallowed so many well known breweries from around the world.
Bohem beers are available at the Bohem Tap Room, 120a Myddleton Rd, London N22 8NQ, and also at MyTime in Palmers Green, the Little Green Dragon in Winchmore Hill, the Great Northern Railway Tavern in Hornsey, the Prince in Wood Green and the Crouch End Cellars.
