I am sure that residents can see that all the new cycle lanes built for the cyclist have made the look of the area much spacious, but that does not take away the fact that the railings where there for a reason and that reason was for safety to protect the pedestrians and vehicles if any collisions, it is also obvious to all residents in the area that the high street shops and buildings are shown to be more visibly filthy and rundown one new thing does not help disguise or make it ok for PG miserableness it is the duty and the responsibility of Cllrs and Enfield Council and shop-keepers to come together and give it a facelift like they have in Waltham Forest which has become a thriving and welcoming shopping area, more cyclist down there because of their beautiful surroundings.

Those that think of these plans should not just focus on just changing one thing it must be the whole as the rest of the area is shown to be left neglected it just makes it look even worse it projects how ugly PG town centre has become, even if we are stuck with unused cycle lanes I do strongly believe to combat air pollution we must be planting more trees and flowers to attract species, we have a long high street which is completely empty and looks sterile which inevitably makes humans feel the same, that is why it is important to put the GREEN back into PG it will definitely make a huge difference in the appearance of the place and hopefully get people out cycling and enjoying their surroundings its all logic and environmental friendly as Sadiq Khan advocates.

Removing the railings certainly changes the view while reducing street clutter is a common policy theme across councils to improve overall appearances. I’m personally not a fan of fencing pedestrians in for the sake of driver entitlement to proceed with less than full care and attention to their surrounding situations. More driver care and perhaps Green Lanes would not have been identified as the third worst road in all of the UK for traffic accidents. Rather than efforts to “save it”, change is indeed what was clearly needed.

There’s a lot to be supported in Joe’s other comments.

Joe we don't have a cycling culture in Britain so of course the cycle lanes are not going to be much used in the short term. The plan is to make cycling easier and more pleasant to do, so that a cycling culture can grow back. Among the people the council plan to encourage into cycling are drivers who make short journeys along Green Lanes on their own; so-called 'driver only' journeys.

Of course the council also hopes that young people will take to cycling, and there are strategies to achieve that. We cannot go on growing the number of cars on the road.

I agree with you and with Karl B. that PG high street could be more welcoming. The council has got plans for that, but the road works had to be got out of the way first.

PG sadly has become miserable and ugly I am so glad you agree with me its sad but it is the truth, ...hopefully like you say now that the roads works are over Enfield Council will make plans to revamp PG high street and also encourage shop-owners to do the same with their rundown shop-fronts and all along Green Lanes, we cannot except people to cycle when we are surrounded by greyness, if we want to make improvements with the environment and encourage people to get fit and healthy then it is obvious that nature is the key and that is having many more Trees and flowers to attract species this will give people the enthusiasm to want to buy a bike and use the cycle lanes surrounded by beauty...we cannot expect to give the public newly built cycle lanes and leave the rest unattended when building something new its not just the one thing that needs changing its the whole, if you take a look at other European countries i.e finland, spain, france etc, who love to cycle it is because they have nature and everything is so charming and this is how the UK should be too, as I feel we are too way behind other countries and we are always the last ones to introduce new changes.

“Our once wonderful iconic Palmers Green Triangle has been reduced to a glorified traffic island”. So writes outgoing Winchmore Hill Conservative Cllr Ertan Hurer in Anthony Webb’s latest Palmers Green & Southgate Life magazine.
Sadly (?) gone for ever, just like the Hanging Gardens of Babylon.

The new looks SOOOOOOOOOOOOO much better!! Open, fresh looking, nice planting that'll only improve with maturity, less clutter and not penned in by metal fencing.

Sadly, with schemes like this, people are so blindly wedded to their incumbent views that they have to take digs irrespective of what is clearly evident - perfectly demonstrated by Ertan Hurer in Palmers Green & Southgate Life magazine.

Perhaps we need a referendum on deciding better before or after?
