Hillbilly Social presents Homebrew Poetry

Wednesday 24 July 7.00pm - 10.00pm

Hillbilly Social at 101, 101 Myddleton Road, N22 8NE

202407 homebrew poetry

Homebrew is a freshly-brewed poetry open mic and feature night at the newly-opened Hillbilly Social 101, Bounds Green.

Host Laurie Eaves invites you to come share your words on the open mic or just kick back with some lovely food and drink and check out feature sets from some of the UK's best poets.

We'll be kicking off our first event on Wednesday 24th of July with incredible feature sets from the mighty Rebecca Cooney and the fabulous Kofi Achina!

Rebecca Cooney is a journalist and performance poet whose poetry explores themes of feminism, home, mental illness, folklore and empire. A Hammer & Tongue National Slam finalist, Rebecca's work has taken her to Glastonbury Festival and the Royal Albert Hall alongside many other poetry stages. Her poem ‘This Is How to Forget Your History’ was longlisted for the 2020 Outspoken Poetry Prize and her pamphlet 'Where the Lights Come On' is out on Allographic Press. She is the producer and co-host of Dead Darlings, a podcast dedicated to spoken word poetry. Expect shape shifting women, dementia, wolves and beard appreciation.

Kofi Achina is a London bred spoken word artist, storyteller and 2x slam winner. Inspired by the likes of Kae Tempest and Little Simz, he weaves together comedy and tragedy, cold rhymes and storylines, to give a voice to his random thoughts and 3am musings. He’s featured at venues across London speaking on a variety of topics ranging from consumerism to hangovers, with his physical presence as punctuation to his performance.

Open mic slots are 5 minutes each. We have a select number of Open Mic tickets available in advance - if you're lucky enough to grab one of these you're guaranteed a slot on the mic. We'll also have a limited number of slots for sign-ups on the night selected at random from the almighty poetry hat!

While we admire and support the Christmas campaigns that we see pop up in December, we also know that help is urgently needed all year round, each and every year. As some people pack away after the festive break, we are still here.

Our support is not limited to a food package, but it leaps beyond - we form connections, we listen and respond to everyone who steps through our doors. We open up a warm, safe, environment which aims to feel like a home away from home.

For us to continue to thrive and grow, and keep supporting as many people as possible, we are asking you to become a Friend of Cooking Champions. Even a donation of just £5-10 per month can make a HUGE impact on the lives of those who come through our doors.

Pop to our People's Fundraising page to donate, and we promise to keep you updated with how your support is making a difference. Thank you, we appreciate you! Team Cooking Champions
