Concert in aid of Maxability: Alexander Boyd, piano

Saturday 27 July 7.30pm

19 Greenacre Walk N14 7DB

202407 maxability concert

Our next concert, on Saturday July 27th at 7.30pm, will be a Piano Recital by one of Maxability’s favourite artists, Alexander Boyd.

Appreciated for the sensitivity and integrity of his interpretations, Alexander enjoys an international career as both soloist and chamber musician.

BIOGRAPHICAL NOTES :

Alexander made his Concerto debut at the age of 11 with the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra conducted by Yerzy Maksymiuk, and since his London Wigmore Hall debut in 2001 he has frequently performed there and at many of the UK’s leading concert halls including London’s South Bank Centre, Barbican, Conway Hall, St Johns Smith Square and St Martins in the Fields. He has given recitals in Ireland, Belgium, Italy and the US, also appearing at international festivals such as Yale and Tanglewood (US), Aldeburgh (UK), Banff (Canada) and Huntingdon (Australia).

This year’s UK recitals include performances at Wigmore Hall, South Bank Centre and Cadogan Hall. He will also join the Dante, Goldner and Navarra String Quartets in chamber music concerts. Alexander has composed the music for three films, “Galatea”, “Sogni d’Oro and “Art in Heaven”, and broadcast for BBC Radio and ABC Radio amongst many others, and in 2020 he was invited by Steinway Pianos to join their international roster of Steinway Artists. Alexander’s recordings of Goyescas by Granados and the Iberia Suite by Albeniz were described by "International Piano Magazine" as “riveting, compelling and utterly haunting, full of poetry, technical virtuosity and Spanish atmosphere” and by "Musical Opinion" as “immaculate playing by this highly gifted artist. There are several rival versions of this wonderful music but none finer than this. First rate”

This year will see the release of Chopin’s 4 Ballades, 4 Impromptus and Barcarolle for Claudio Records and Naxos.

Tonight’s programme

Mozart - Sonata in A minor K310

mozart manuscriptHere’s the ms. of the first movement - what does that tell you?

Schumann - Sonata in G minor Op.22

The four movements are:

  1. So rasch wie möglich ("As quickly as possible" — however, near the end, Schumann writes "Schneller" and then "Noch schneller", meaning "Faster" and "Still faster")
  2. Andantino. Getragen (Solemn/Dignified)
  3. Scherzo. Sehr rasch und markiert (Very quick and marked)
  4. Rondo. Presto possible, Prestissimo, quasi cadenza

(Interval)

Chopin - Nocturne Op.27 N.2,  Impromptu Op.36 N.2

(These sublime works must be heard, not written about!)

Albeniz - Iberia Suite - 1 "Fete-Dieu a Seville" [N.3 Book 1]

- 2 "El Albaicin" [N.1 Book 3]

As pianist and composer Albeniz was a leading figure in the creation of a national style of composition in Spain. He also composed operas (including King Arthur to English words), songs, and orchestral music. But he is best known for his piano music, some of which has been arranged by others for orchestra. The Iberia Suite is Albéniz's best-known work and considered his masterpiece. It was highly praised by Debussy and Messiaen, who said: "Iberia is the wonder for the piano; it is perhaps on the highest place among the more brilliant pieces for the king of instruments". Stylistically, this suite falls squarely into the Impressionistic School, notably in its musical evocations of Spain
