A new exhibition from local artist Samantha Schneider is set to launch at Bloqs on Friday 15th March 2024.
Sam is an Edmonton based, mixed media artist who creates vibrant, fluid work mainly using watercolour, acrylics and ink. Working outdoors is central to her practice as it’s being in the elements, in front of the subject where she finds inspiration to respond creatively. She enjoys connecting further with her surroundings by using found material like sticks to draw with.
After studying Visual Communication at Leeds College of Art and Design, for many years worked in arts project management and community engagement before recommencing development of her creative practice. An ongoing project involves an artistic exploration of my late grandfather’s book of life advice, which has been used to run creative projects in care homes. As well as taking inspiration from nature she also enjoys writing poetry and incorporating text into my work, focusing on themes of grief and experiences of being a carer.
In 2023, Sam designed shutter artwork for Alix Dry Cleaners and Boundary Hall Community Centre as part of Fore Street For All’s ‘Open All Hours’ project in Edmonton.
“I am proud to have contributed to the improvement of my local high street and have seen the positive impact the artwork has made.” Sam explains.
Her love for Tottenham marshes started during lockdown; like many people, it was an opportunity to discover the natural beauty on her doorstep.
Drawn to views that included pylons and cranes - she began seeing them as beautiful structures, each having a unique charm. This has led to a deep exploration into the juxtaposition between the industrial and natural landscape and the harmony that can exist, which is the theme of this selection of autumn and winter scenes from 2023.
For practical reasons many of the art works are created from the same spots, providing the opportunity to record the changing landscape across the seasons.
As part of this exhibition, Sam will be inviting you to experience the power of the marshes at two special group art sessions on Saturday 13th April and Sunday 21st April. Participants must bring their own materials. Please note there is no formal tuition during the session, it is an opportunity to try outdoor sketching in a fun and relaxed way.
