Exhibition: Close Quarters

Tuesday 25 April 2023 until Sunday 28 May 2023

Dugdale Arts Centre, London Road, Enfield Town EN2 6DS

202305 close quarters

Curated by Jade Chao and Tope Olufemi, Close Quarters invited Edmonton’s local artists and students to explore themes of home and identity through a series of participatory workshops across political writing, music, printing and design. The project responds to the continual gutting of arts in education, offering Year 9 and 10 students access to alternative creative ideas and materials, while developing their connection with the history and community of the local area through the facilitators.

The exhibition will showcase the work of the students and artists, and will be shown alongside a short documentary detailing the experiences of the students that took part in Close Quarters, what they took from each session, and the creative skills they developed while taking part in the project. The session facilitators present their own creative processes, what drew them to their practice, and what they took from the students they shared their art with.

Close Quarters will contain work and insights from students Tamina Taylor, Sia Gill, Maria Andreou, Deniz Koc, Haylee Young, Delia Costea, Zeynep Altun, Jared Griffiths and Sude Recber. Facilitators include filmmaker Timi Akindele-Ajani, designer and art director Jeng Au, cinemaker Jade Chao, author Lola Olufemi, musician Tope Olufemi, and artist Nancy Stanly.

While we admire and support the Christmas campaigns that we see pop up in December, we also know that help is urgently needed all year round, each and every year. As some people pack away after the festive break, we are still here.

Our support is not limited to a food package, but it leaps beyond - we form connections, we listen and respond to everyone who steps through our doors. We open up a warm, safe, environment which aims to feel like a home away from home.

For us to continue to thrive and grow, and keep supporting as many people as possible, we are asking you to become a Friend of Cooking Champions. Even a donation of just £5-10 per month can make a HUGE impact on the lives of those who come through our doors.

Pop to our People's Fundraising page to donate, and we promise to keep you updated with how your support is making a difference. Thank you, we appreciate you! Team Cooking Champions
