Enfield Refugee Welcome brought their first Syrian refugee family to the borough earlier this year. In their Christmas message to supporters, they report that the family are doing well. They are now planning to settle a second family, but need various volunteers.
To find out how families are selected and how the settlement process works, watch the fascinating interview with Tony Carroll at the bottom of this article.
With the support of our amazing band of volunteer befrienders and interpreters, the family are doing really well. The children have settled into school, making friends in their classes. The secondary school children have received special awards for their progress this term. The family are making good progress in learning English even though it has a completely different script from Arabic.
We are now looking for new members to support a second refugee family to settle into the borough. In particular we need:
- A volunteer housing representative to search for suitable housing
- A volunteer Befriender coordinator
- Volunteer Befrienders
- Volunteer Interpreters (Arabic)
Befrienders offer practical support and advice, assisting the sponsored family to adjust to life in London.
If you are interested in volunteering for any of these roles please get in touch with or via our website http://www.enfieldrefugeewelcome.org
We will be holding a general meeting in February, further details to follow.
