Just before 2pm on 1st January London Fire Brigade was called to deal with a fire at St John the Evangelist Church on the corner of Green Lanes and Bourne Hill, where a "small part of the church was alight". Six fire engines and around 40 firefighters attended from Edmonton, Hornsey and Enfield fire stations, and the fire was brought under control just after 3pm.

The Reverend Julie Coleman, Vicar of St John's, has issued the following statement:

“On New Year’s Day there was a fire at St John’s. Thankfully nobody was hurt, but the fire has caused extensive damage, the extent of which is still unknown. Our thanks go to the fire service for their quick response and support, and to the police, who continue to investigate the cause of the fire.”

“This terrible situation will not stop us being a missional church here in Palmers Green. We will continue to meet as a church community, albeit in the Parish Centre, alongside our regular community outreach programmes. We ask that you keep us in your prayers.”

In a post on former Twitter Revd Coleman published information about temporary arrangements:

"Until the church is repaired we will be holding a Sunday Holy Communion service at 9.30am in St John's Parish Centre beginning this Sunday. If possible we will add services as and when we can. I personally look forward to your fellowship at a time when fellowship and prayer is needed most.

"Our weekly 9.30am Morning Prayer and Thursdays 10.30am Holy Communion will also be held in the Parish Centre.

"The Ark will operate Wednesday, Thursday and Friday from the Parish Centre as usual."
