Last week saw a very sad event - the closure until further notice of Wood Green's unique Wolves Lane Centre - a combination of a nursery growing plants for Haringey's parks, a public garden centre, a small-scale Eden Project and an invaluable social and community asset. it provided training in gardening skills to help people with physical and/or learning difficulties or seeking employment, and both environmental education and work experience for local schoolchildren.

The Mayor of London has announced that he intends to bring forward the introduction of the Ultra-Low Emissions Zone (ULEZ) in Central London by a year. Subject to further consultation, it will now come into force in April 2019. Drivers of petrol vehicles that don’t meet Euro 4 standards and diesel vehicles that do not meet Euro 6 standards will have to pay a daily fee of £12.50 for cars, vans and motorbikes and £100 for buses, coaches and HGVs.

North London Samaritans have been given a Big Lottery Fund grant of £545,0000 to rebuild a former "Tin Tabernacle" to use as a centre for their lifesaving work and to provide a new communitiy facility for Bowes Park.

North London Hospice is in desperate need of volunteers at its inpatient unit in Woodside Avenue, especially at the weekend and in the evening. Volunteering is very rewarding and gives so much back.

The annual May Day Fair on Southgate Green will take place on Monday 1st May from 11am to 4pm. The May Day Fair is organised by Christ Church Southgate with the support of the Southgate & Highlands ATC & the Hatters Explorer Scouts, who will also benefit from the funds raised. This year there will be an emphasis on sustainability, with a ‘Green’ theme to events and competitions. This year the main beneficiary will be Haven House Children’s Hospice (Charity.......

The national charity Action on Hearing Loss has joined the campaign against proposals by the Enfield Clinical Commissioning Group to restrict access to some medical procedures and has issued a press release - see the box below.

Enfield Council has announced that it will be accepting new applications to set up a Play Street until 30th April. Successful applications will be licensed to operate from 1 August 2017 until 31 July 2018.

If you were wondering why trees and undergrowth are being cleared next to the section of the New River that runs parallel and close by Green Lanes, it's to create what is in effect a mini-park, with a path running between Barrowell Green and Carpenter Gardens, new trees that will provide better sight lines and new seating.
The improvement works are a joint project between Enfield Council and Thames Water.
