North Central London CCG, the body that pays for NHS services in our area, has announced the withdrawal of the extended access to free patient transport services that was set up in response to the Covid-19 pandemic. The extended access meant that free transportation to and from non-emergency hospital appointments was available to anyone identified as "clinically extremely vulnerable" and without access to a car.
Withdrawal of the scheme, which has already occurred, has come in response to the end of the "shielding" programme, as announced by the health and social care department in September. From now on the narrower pre-pandemic eligibility criteria are back in force, so merely being "clinically extremely vulnerable" will not of itself qualify you for free transportation.
The criteria for providing free transportation are themselves currently under review - a consultation on proposed changes ended on 25th November.
