Question 1. What do think is good about the area?
Palmers Green has the feel of a community. It is varied in its make-up. It is mostly green tidy and safe.
Question 2. What do you think is less good about the area?
Shops in the High Street appear to becoming scruffier as they get taken up by charity shops. Not enough variety of shopping – can only see people moving out of town.
Driving is awful – often dangerous!
Youths hanging about more now – Starbucks, McDonalds and the Big Slick are the worst. Often somewhat intimidating.
Question 3. What would you like to see to improve the area?
More variety of shops. Higher-end shops. Palmers Green should really be on the same level as Muswell Hill that has a really good shopping centre in town. The high-end housing just behind the High Street clashes with what is there.
Parking is awful.
Question 4a. Specific aspects – traffic
Too fast (people on their mobiles and without seat belts). Bourne Hill Crossroads are a death trap with people shooting the lights.
Too many cyclists on the pavements.
Question 4b. Specific aspects – parking
Nowhere to park after 8.30am on a Saturday! People park illegally much of the time and argue with wardens when they get caught!
Question 4c. Specific aspects – clutter
The process of putting in new lampposts was too long – always pavements being dug up. Still somewhat like that along Green Lanes coming from Enfield to the Triangle. Haven’t noticed any other ‘clutter’ really.
Question 4d. Specific aspects – look of the shops/architecture
The High Street is a good example of an Edwardian street – why Harry Potter filmed there. Much being changed in not very good taste. Some shops been empty for years and looking bad.
Question 4e. Specific aspacts – type and range of shops
Not enough range – see comments about Muswell Hill previously. What do they have that we do not?
Question 4f. Specific aspects – amount and use of pavement space
- Fine to me except the small stones they use tend to trip you up!
Question 4h. Specific aspects – Greenery
Greenery is OK – the hanging baskets are good. Wouldn’t want to go over the top with these.
Spindly trees planted are a bit dull.
Any other comments
We need to get some life back into the High Street but it is a challenge – look at the number of restaurants that have closed over the past year and are still empty. New one seems to be full which is good.
Too many charity shops.
It still feels really safe, e.g. walking home late at night. The Fox pub sorted out its ‘youth’ issues but I think the Big Slick may become another problem.
More signs to parks? More to do in parks, e.g. cafe in Broomfield?
Can we doing something about staffing at the station – waiting room is trashed and full of litter every weekend.
Thanks for the opportunity of this.
