Haringey Council is reportedly considering closing Wolves Lane Garden Centre as part of the cost savings measures it is having to make in response to cuts in central government funding.
Unlike most garden centres, which are almost entirely focussed on sales, the Wolves Lane Centre has several important community roles:
- it provides training in gardening skills to help people with physical and/or learning difficulties or seeking employment
- it provides work experience for schoolchildren
- it provides environmental education for 2500 local schoolchildren a year
- it grows plants and vegetables for Haringey Council parks.
Unique features of the Centre include a palm house, desert garden and rainforest - no need to go all the way to Cornwall!
An online petition has been set up with the aim of persuading Haringey Council to keep the Centre open. Only 
Haringey residents can sign - so if you have friends or family who live in Haringey, you might want to bring it to their attention.
