Whose designs, created in a studio in Southgate, have been seen everywhere from cruise liners and theatres to national retailers and London Underground? You may have spotted her work in the Midland Grand Hotel, St Pancras, on stage at the Old Vic, the National Theatre or the O2, or you may even have one of her lighting designs in your home. The answer is Dan Maier, and there are three opportunities this month to meet her.
If you don't yet know Dan Maier and her business Extraordinary Design, you'll surely know some of her work and possibly have trodden on it - it was Dan who designed the colourful pedestrian crossing at Southgate Circus, and brightened up windows at Southgate Station, Southgate Library and at the Southgate Club in Chase Side. This month, if you yourself are a designer-maker, she'll be passing on some valuable advice about how to market your work at craft fairs and other events, and she'll be providing information about free opportunities to sell your products at events organised by Enfield Council and funded by the government through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund (UKSPF).
But if you're more into admiring and enjoying beautiful things than making and selling them, there's a third event on 26th October, when Dan will be telling her story at a public meeting of Southgate District Civic Voice with the title Illuminating Art - From Lampshades to Landmarks - A Designer’s Journey, starting with "a light bulb moment that sparked a decade designing lighting followed by a daring leap into the world of public art".
