The current exhibition at the Southgate Art Gallery (at the front of the Southgate Club in Chase Side) features some unusual slit-scan panoramic photography by Gareth Davies - see his explanation below. The exhibition runs until the end of August. Entry is free - just ring the doorbell during opening hours.
I specialise in panoramic imaging, an interest first started in 1995 using a Russian swing-lens camera and developed by building a rotating 360° camera in 1999. I have continued to explore panoramic imaging in its more familiar pictorial uses, as well as less conventional applications and techniques. I am showing a selection of slit-scan images, a technique which is best known in sports photofinish images and the star gate sequence in Stanley Kubrick's “2001: A Space Odyssey”, and which enables the capture of progress, repetition and time within a single still image.
The exhibited images are of several of London’s parades that have fully returned to our streets after the hiatus due to the pandemic. These slit-scan images aim to capture the joy and fun of the return of such events:

As well as photography, I work as a satellite data engineer for the European Organisation for the Exploitation of Meteorological Satellites (EUMETSAT). I am a Fellow of the British Interplanetary Society and a member of the International Association of Panoramic Photographers. My work has been exhibited in England, Italy and Croatia, and I also collaborate in live music performances which feature my photographs and videos.

Mondays - Thursdays 5.00pm - 11.00pm
Fridays: 3.00pm - 11.30pm
Saturday 12.00 noon - 11.30pm
