A new website, Enfield in Poetry, presents an interactive map of the borough with markers denoting the settings of verses about a local place written by a a local poet. You can read the poems or have the poets read them to you.

There are two poems set in Palmers Green - one at the railway station, the other in Broomfield Park.

One of the poems, Oakfield Road by Maggie Butt, is shown on the map as referring to a street in Harringay. Can this be right? That's outside the borough. It must have been written about the Oakfield Road at the top of Fox Lane.

About the project

Poetry flows through Enfield. It suffused the clay and was fired into the bricks used to build its houses.  Why else should Enfield have so many poets starting with Henry VIII, Elizabeth I, Raleigh, James I, through Thomas Hood, Charles Lamb, Keats, Stevie Smith and now Enfield Poets? Out of this arose the “Enfield in Poetry” map. Here markers are placed on a map of Enfield which, when clicked upon, produce a menu with an audio file of a poem relating to that spot on the map. In the case of the monarchs and Raleigh, a poem we imagine was written when they lived in Enfield.

Most are poems written and recorded by contemporary poets, 2021, and we hope that when the map is published more poems will be submitted for inclusion.
