Palmers Green has another new website! The latest addition is Palmers Green Tales, created by a project team led by Jenny Bourke and including Suzanne Beard of Palmers Green Jewel in the North fame.

Palmers Green Tales will be recording the history of Palmers Green in both oral and visual form - presenting local people's memories in words and, wherever possible, including video clips of the interviews.

Palmers Green TalesAll the Tales on the website will feature people who have spent time in and around Palmers Green.

The first aim of the Palmers Green Tales project is to create a bank of film and sound recordings which feature interesting tales - oral histories. "Tales" because they will always be told from a personal point of view and be all the more interesting for being so.

A second aim is to make the Tales accessible to everyone who is interested. To help in this aim Jenny and her team are considering producing a paper edition at a later date.

Jenny introduces the first few of many tales to come:

"At the end of 2013 the site holds some wonderful memories. Firstly, Norman talks about coming to Palmers Green as a child, teenager and young man, why it was an important place for him, how he enjoyed playing in Broomfield Park, messing about with boats and the shops and cinemas he frequented.

"Then we hear from a wonderful friendship group who have remained in contact for 40 years. Most of them got to know each other when their children were young and when time allowed continued to meet up. As most are now retired, they now try to meet weekly.

"There has been a wonderful tradition of a pantomime presented by the parents of Hazelwood Schools to the children and local residents. It has been a tradition as long as we can remember, for at least 30 years but no-one can remember its beginnings - please help us out here. We have memories from Moira and Chrissy.

"We then have the wonderful memories of Mike Barnard. He was brought up very close to Broomfield Park which he and his brothers considered to be their personal playground, especially during World War II."

The Palmers Green Tales team would be interested to hear not only from people with stories to tell, but also from those with technical expertise in using Wordpress and in making and editing short films. You can get in touch via the Palmers Green Tales Contact Us page.
