healthwatch enfield agm details posterIn common with all parts of England, the NHS in Enfield is suffering from shortages of GPs and hospital staff, accident and emergency departments at the North Mid and Barnet hospitals are struggling and patients are having to wait longer for planned operations. Enfield's NHS is not alone in being underfunded too, but even compared with neighbouring north London boroughs Enfield suffers from particularly severe financial problems. And, again like everywhere in England, Enfield's NHS is in the middle of a major reorganisation. You will be able to find out more, and feed in your views, at Healthwatch Enfield's annual general meeting on 4th March at the Lee Valley Sports Complex.

Currently many of the NHS services provided to Enfield residents are paid for by an organisation called Enfield Clinical Commissioning Group (Enfield CCG). In April this will be merged with CCGs in four other north London boroughs to create a CCG covering the whole of Enfield, Barnet, Camden, Islington and Haringey. This is part of a move to create an "Integrated Care System" (ICS). There will be a further 43 ICSs or similar arrangements covering the rest of England, each with its own particularities.

While the principle of "integrating" health services is, on the face of it, a sound one, NHS campaigning groups remain highly suspicious about the thinking behind this concept and the eventual effects it will have on the provision of NHS services, especially because of the involvement in the reorganisation process of US healthcare organisations and powerful consultancies such as Johnson Matthey. The campaigners warn that the result is likely to be that the range of services and procedures available free will vary widely between different parts of the country. They see a danger that patients will increasingly pay to have operations such as hip replacements carried out quickly - this is already happening. Free NHS services may end up as a second class option for those unable to pay privately.
