Local bus routes in disarray after operator pulls out at short notice

New operators have now filled the sudden gaps in local bus services that arose following the announcement on Friday by Sullivan Buses that it would cease operating routes under contract to Transport for London (TfL) that same evening. Of the eight routes affected, four run through or very close to Palmers Green: the W9, 299, 298 and 217. However, because the replacement services were arranged at such short notice, frequencies on some routes are reduced, the buses may not have proper destination blinds and the buses that are running will probably not show up on phone apps or Countdown displays at bus stops.

Sullivan Buses was the last remaining independent bus operator left running Transport for London services - the other operators are all subsidiaries of large firms, some of which also run train services and buses abroad. For instance Arriva, which has garages in Palmers Green and Wood Green, previously belonged to the nationalised German rail operator DB, but has now been sold to a private equity company).

Sullivan's record on the W9 and 299 has been very poor in recent months. Is this simply because of incompetence on their behalf, or because the way that TfL tenders out bus services creates serious cash flow difficulties for small operators?

However, the new operator which has taken over from Sullivan on the 298 between Arnos Grove and Potters Bar is another that doesn't belong to the big groups. Uno is owned by the University of Hertfordshire.
